Even people who may seem effortlessly successful on the outside go through the same kinds of internal struggles as everyone else. Recognizing your power to control parts of your day and to choose consistency in working toward your goals is key to unlocking your full potential. This week, Cleveland Indians Mental Performance Coach Brian Miles talks about being present, quieting the ego, and committing to the challenges you set for yourself.

When Miles is running laps in the morning, it’s always tempting to stop at six instead of doing the full nine around the field, he says. He’s honest when he talks about these small bumps in the road throughout the day because it’s important for people to know they aren’t alone in working past that inner voice that sometimes wants to give up. Taking back your power to achieve means making the choice to win the battle and recognizing that you have a say in your own success. It may feel risky or scary at first, but it ultimately opens up more opportunities in the long run.

Do you let success make you slip?⁣

A lot of us do.⁣

We build some momentum. We achieve a few small wins. And for some reason we take our foot off the gas.⁣

We relax. We slow down. We become complacent.⁣

And we miss out on the opportunities we'd previously worked so hard to set ourselves up for.

Don't let that be you, too.

For Drew Maddux, head basketball coach at Christ Presbyterian Academy in Nashville, the future is always in the background of his coaching efforts. By keeping a vision of what is possible for his team down the road, he’s able to take a human-centered approach to coaching. Through fostering connections and trust with his players, Maddux reinforces their potential as individuals, both on and off the court.

Building a championship culture starts with all the little things that happen behind the scenes, he says. It’s how players tuck in their shirts, walk onto the court, tie their shoelaces, and interact with their teammates. All of those details work in service of a larger vision for them 10 or 15 years in the future, making it possible to groom leaders by reinforcing good practices and habits every day. “We’re going to hold them accountable and we’re going to make sure there’s a clear understanding that accountability is directly correlated with love, not having an agenda, and wanting what’s best for them as a human being,” he says.

Mindfulness is all about opening yourself up to truly experiencing whatever is happening in the present moment. It’s a word that some people gravitate toward, just as others tend to avoid it. But at its core, it’s about living with your feet on the ground, wherever you are. This week, Dr. Daya Grant, who is a neuroscientist, yoga instructor, and sport psychology consultant, talks about the benefits of taking a deep breath, filtering out the white noise, and focusing on what’s really important.

Dr. Grant says there are ways you can incorporate these tips into your everyday routine to help you hone your focus and put your best foot forward, no matter what life brings your way. For example, you might want to start your day by not looking at your phone. Whether you can hold off for 8 minutes or a whole hour, every bit helps. At the end of the day, perhaps try journaling and writing down the things you’d like to process before you sleep. And before you begin an important task, find a pre-performance routine that works for you, so you’re reading to pay attention without distraction when the time comes.

Even if you can't do everything you want at the level you want, you can still do something, right? Most people don't do anything because what they can do isn't at the same level they want to do it.

They missed the most important part of growth - you have to start somewhere and the only way to get "there" is by getting better by getting in reps.

So even if you can't do it all today, will you still compete to do something?
